Welding large parts
Wide welds – long distances
Using optimized welding equipment is essential when welding large parts because the wide welds on the parts, which are usually subject to heavy loads, must remain permanently stable and securely attached. Also, large distances often need to be bridged between the power source and the welding point. The wire and gas supplies need to work reliably and all parameters and various welding programs must be retrievable, if possible by remote control.
Different procedures, plate thicknesses and materials
Large parts need to be welded when building ships, rail vehicles, cranes, bridges, power stations or construction and compacting machines. High melting rates are required during welding due to the widths of the welds, the different sheet metal thicknesses and various welding conditions. Depending on the alloy of the steel that is used, various welding procedures can be applied. MIG and MAG welding deliver the best results when welding large parts. When welding outdoors, gas-free manual metal arc welding is recommended. Large aluminum parts are usually welded in a MIG procedure.
Optimum wire supply, sturdy design, low weight
To guarantee access to all welding points and to ensure optimum welding results, large parts are often placed on big rotating and tilting modules. Welders frequently need to change their position which is why it is important that the torches are lightweight, sturdy and mobile. Torches with rotating and easily exchangeable necks in various lengths and with different bending angles are advantageous when welding in difficult-to-access areas.
The cable assemblies of the torches must be flexible, lightweight and extremely durable because they are frequently pulled over sharp edges.
When welding large parts it is often necessary to bridge large distances, and in some cases the welders also need to climb into the parts with their torches. For this reason, it is imperative that the wire supply functions flawlessly. This is why Push-Pull torches are often used in these cases because they have an additional wire supply unit in the handle allowing the wire to be securely supplied even over distances of 8 to 16 meters. ABICOR BINZEL is an experienced specialist and supplies a wide range of torches that are ideally suited for welding large parts.
