Does this sound familiar?
With the requirements of the employers' liability insurance association, you are faced with an issue that has not been given primary attention before: the limit values for fume exposure from welding work in your production.
Your welders demand a healthy workplace where they are protected from harmful fumes.
The requirements for on-site welding fume extraction call for a system that can adapt flexibly to changing demands.
You already have hood or funnel extraction systems, but these do not extract enough harmful fumes and are also bulky.
The health of your employees is important to you and you need a solution that can be implemented quickly and easily.
Features
The xFUME® COMMANDER extraction system offers all the powerful features of larger extraction systems. It manages the balancing act between a small mobile device and a large stationary fume extraction system.
Individual motor power
As a single-phase version with 1.1 kW, the xFUME® COMMANDER is optimally equipped for fume extraction at up to two manual welding stations. As a three-phase version with 2.5 kW, the fume extraction unit can be connected to a welding robot or welding cobot together with our xFUME® ABIROB® extraction torches. With the 2.5 kW power, you can also bridge longer distances between the extraction torch and extraction system.
Intuitive operation via rotary knob and LCD display
The device has a practical display that allows you to conveniently view all important parameters: Actual and target output, filter fill level indicator, volume flow monitoring, start-up time and run-on time. Use the practical rotary knob, which is easy to operate even when wearing gloves.
Integrated volume flow monitoring
If the number of connected extraction torches changes, the extraction unit requires a different volume flow in order to fulfill the extraction performance according to the standard. If, for example, a second extraction torch is connected using the Y-piece, the required volume flow must be reset accordingly. If the required volume flow deviates from the preset value, the xFUME® COMMANDER signals acoustically.
Tool-free filter exchange
When servicing the xFUME® COMMANDER extraction system, for example if you want to change the filter, you can access the inside of the device without any additional tools. Simply open the top section using the quick-release fastener and both the cleanable main filter cartridge and the HEPA filter positioned behind it are now easily accessible.
Practical mobility
Ramps, uneven hall floors or kerbs are no obstacle when you want to move the xFUME® COMMANDER to another location. The two large wheels mounted at the rear and the handle on the top make it easy to move the mobile extraction unit. When parked, a special pedestal ensures that the fume extraction unit stands securely.
Reduced noise level
Due to their design and extraction power, extraction systems for welding fumes cause a comparatively high noise level, which is an additional burden in production or the workshop. The xFUME® COMMANDER extraction system is equipped with silencers and therefore has a significantly lower impact on the environment.
The modular design of the xFUME® COMMANDER makes it easy for you to use the extraction system either as a mobile unit or as a stationary system. As a mobile unit, the xFUME® COMMANDER with its two wheels and dust box is ideal for use at changing manual welding workstations.
As an option, you can also use the extraction system as a stationary unit. To do this, the lower module (dust box and roller system) is replaced by a collection container with a capacity of 60 liters. With this solution, you can use the xFUME® COMMANDER especially with industrial robots and welding cobots. This means that nothing stands in the way of continuous operation.

Suitable extraction torches for extraction at source
The xFUME® COMMANDER fume extraction system achieves its full performance in combination with an extraction torch from the xFUME® series. These are designed exclusively for the expressly recommended extraction at source.
The following xFUME® extraction torches can be used with the xFUME® COMMANDER extraction system:
xFUME® PRO
- gas cooled and liquid cooled
- for use in tough industrial environments where high currents are used for welding
xFUME® PRO HD
- gas cooled and liquid cooled
- very robust for welding thick sheets, for extra long welding times and high welding currents
xFUME® COMPACT
- gas cooled
- lightweight, handy extraction torches for thin sheets and simple repair work, fit in the hand like comparable standard MIG/MAG torches
xFUME® TIG
- gas cooled and liquid cooled
- lightweight and ergonomic handling for welding stainless steels, aluminum alloys and high-alloy materials
xFUME® AUT
- gas cooled and liquid cooled
- automatic extraction torches for simple semi-automated processes in series production

What is so special about the xFUME® COMMANDER?
The xFUME® COMMANDER extraction system from ABICOR BINZEL has the special feature that it can be used for manual welding as well as for cobot welding or robot welding. This is made possible by its modular design: Dust boxes are sufficient for manual welding workstations. In this function, the xFUME® COMMANDER can also be easily moved from one location to another using the sturdy wheels. Connected to a welding cobot or an industrial robot, it becomes a stationary system by replacing the lower part of the device with the dust box and wheels with a 60-liter dust collection container. This means that the extraction system is no longer mobile but is more suitable for continuous operation.
To whom do the limit values for fume exposure during welding work apply?
Every company that carries out welding work is obliged to comply with the regulations and guidelines for welding fume extraction. You can download the current technical rules for hazardous substances in welding from the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
My welders demand protection from welding fumes. What can I do?
The best protection against harmful fumes is extraction at source. You can achieve this with a fume extraction torch and a suitable fume extraction system. Good extraction systems for extraction at source filter out 99.76 % of all dusts > 0.1 mm. You will find such systems in the xFUME® series from ABICOR BINZEL.
I have changing workstations for manual welding. Which extraction system is suitable?
We recommend the xFUME® ADVANCED fume extraction system from ABICOR BINZEL for fume extraction during manual welding with an extraction torch. This system is equipped with 4 rollers and is easy to move. The xFUME® COMMANDER extraction system is also suitable for up to two manual extraction torches. Thanks to its modular design, this system can also be adapted for use with a welding cobot or welding robot.
We work with hood extraction and funnel extraction. Which is more efficient?
Hood extraction and funnel extraction are better than no welding fume extraction at all! Extraction at source is clearly more efficient in terms of fume absorption. The fumes do not even reach the respiratory organs but are extracted directly at the point of origin. This is made possible by a high-vacuum system. This means that the welding fumes are extracted under high static pressure and relatively low volume flow using a combined welding fume extraction torch.
Which extraction system can I integrate quickly and easily into my workshop?
Mobile welding fume extraction systems are particularly suitable for workshops. They usually have rollers and can be easily moved from one location to another. The best thing is that mobile fume extraction systems use extraction torches for extraction at source. Depending on the angle at which they are set up, they can extract between 90 % and 99 % of the fumes at their point of origin. The welder can therefore weld almost fume-free. The xFUME® COMMANDER extraction system together with an xFUME® ABIROB® extraction torch is ideal for use in a workshop.
