Strong welds on the high seas
EEW OSB – the Erndtebrücker Eisenwerk Offshore Structures Britain – in the northeast of England, as a subsidiary of the EEW Group, manufactures so-called transition pieces for wind turbines on the high seas. Since its founding in 2014, EEW OSB has already produced 140 pieces of these components. The 250 to 500 tonnes transition pieces are welded among other things with the air cooled lightweight welding torches from ABICOR BINZEL.
Special demands on the constructions
High waves, strong winds and salt water are environmental conditions that give an idea of the requirements placed on offshore wind turbines. It goes without saying that all components and their connections must meet the highest demands in production. The transition pieces manufactured by EEW OSB are the large middle section of three main components: a so-called monopile foundation firmly anchored in the seabed, the transition piece containing the electrical switchgear and access to the tower, and the turbine tower with propeller blades.
Welders at EEW OSB work in the tubes, on their outsides and even below. Likewise on different levels and lifting platforms. Also overhead. Our ABIMIG® A T LW torches provide excellent service with their rotatable torch neck and extremely lightweight cable assembly.
Ideal in handling, use and service life
On the one hand, the torch neck of the ABIMIG®A T LW can be rotated, which makes it easier to weld even hard-to-reach seams and strongly supports the wrist. In addition, the lightweight cable assembly makes the torch itself considerably lighter. On the other hand, the cooling of the air cooled ABIMIG® A T LW is better than with the previously used liquid cooled torches of another brand, which caused only problems. Meanwhile, EEW OSB has about 90 % ABIMIG® A T LW in use. Liquid cooled welding torches are no longer needed.
For some years now, the company has been using these torches, some of which are clamped on a welding tractor to pull long seams. Indeed, we are proud of the fact that transition pieces are being built all over the oceans, welded with our ABIMIG® torches.
