DVS-IIW Young Professionals – ABICOR BINZEL supports young scientists and engineers from the joining technology sector
The Annual Assembly of the IIW – the International Institute of Welding – is the global event in the joining, separating and coating branch. Prestigious researchers from around 50 nations meet here to discuss the joining technologies of the future.
The aim of the DVS and ABICOR BINZEL as one of four well-known sponsors is to open up this international stage more for young scientists. For this reason, the participation of selected young scientists and engineers is supported. These young professionals have an exclusive opportunity here to give a talk to an international public, to exchange experiences with experts from over 50 nations and to develop global contacts. In addition, of course, international contacts among the young professionals are to be created and supported.
In 2015 the funding programme “Students and Young Professionals in the DVS” was realised for the first time through sponsoring and, thanks to generous donations from Alexander Binzel Schweisstechnik GmbH & Co. KG, EWM AG, the Research Association on Welding and Allied Processes e.V. of the DVS, and Linde AG, the DVS (German Welding Association) enabled a total of 31 joining technology students and young scientists to take part in the annual assembly and international conference of the International Institute of Welding (IIW), which was held this year in Helsinki, Finland, from 28 June to 3 July 2015.
Prerequisite for participation in the IIW conference is the presentation of the participant’s own research work in the appropriate IIW commission. This is a unique opportunity for students and young scientists to meet international experts
and also to develop valuable contacts. The various events, such as the International Young Professionals Evening, which was held for the first time at an IIW Annual Assembly, are also a good opportunity for global networking. Up to now, there had been an unofficial “German Evening” during the multi-day IIW conference on the initiative of the DVS, in order to strengthen networking among young German professionals.
The DVS funding programme is exemplary internationally as well, and the success of the conference for the German delegation of young scientists and young engineers from joining technology is impressive: 31 presentations of research work, two awards, an international competition and a birthday – these are just some of the numerous experiences of the DVS-IIW Young Professionals at the 68th IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference in Helsinki, Finland.
In 2015, the DVS was again able to realise support for DVS-IIW Young Professionals thanks to generous sponsors, and enabled 31 young academics to attend the 68th IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference from 28 June to 3 July 2015 in Helsinki.
The DVS-IIW Young Professionals presented their research results before an international public in the IIW’s various technical commissions. The DVS is a key player in the IIW with this development of young scientists and serves as an example for others of the around 50 member nations of the IIW. Because support for young scientists, particularly in the field of welding technology, has always been a concern of ABICOR BINZEL, support for the IIW Young Professionals for a presentation of their research work on the international stage of joining and separating technology is a worthy successor engagement after the 20-year long existence of the ABICOR innovation prize, which was awarded for the last time in 2014.
The funding programme “Students and Young Professionals in the DVS” was realised for the first time so successfully through sponsoring that it is already certain that DVS-IIW Young Professionals will again be financially supported as well at the IIW Annual Assembly 2016, in Melbourne, Australia. With this offer, the DVS is setting an example in the promotion of young professionals jointly with ABICOR BINZEL as sponsor in 2016 as well, and is a model for other international welding technology associations, for example, the AWS – the American Welding Society. The US society will be exchanging views with the DVS on the formation of the funding programme, in order to develop something similar.
